Abraham Lincoln
1849

During this year Abraham Lincoln practiced law on the old Eighth Judicial District of Illinois. This required him to be away from home for extended periods of time.



1852

Campaigned for Winfield Scott, who ran unsuccessfully for president for the Whig party.



1854

Lincoln was roused by the repeal of the Missouri Compromise, which was an agreement between the slave holding states and the free states regulating the introduction of slavery into the western territories. The Kansas-Nebraska Bill is passed.

Lincoln clashed with his old rival Stephen Douglas.

Lincoln is elected to the Illinois legislature again.



1855

Shortly after his election to the legislature, Lincoln resigned in order to run for the United States senate, but he was defeated.



1856

On May 29, Abraham Lincoln spoke at the Bloomington Convention, which organized the new Republican Party in Illinois.

In that same year he received 110 votes nominating him for the Vice Presidential candidate at the Republican Convention held at Philadelphia.

Lincoln was selected a candidate for presidential elector on the republican ticket, and he campaigned for John Charles Fremont.

Lincoln again attacked Stephen Douglas's position.
